Franchising's Momentum in 2006

As the franchise world heads to the 2006 IFA Convention (we're in booth 408 for those who are attending - stop by and say hello), let's look at what our data shows is happening in franchising:

  • Systems that have been franchising for 5 or more years a modest 14.2% growth in franchised units according to their 2005 UFOC (year-end 2004 data). The 3-year trend looks like this:

  • We identified 513 new concepts in 2005. Those are primarily new franchising business, with some subfranchisors, new co-brand options, and local systems that have reached the national stage.

  • According to our most recent database analysis, more franchised units are controlled by multi-unit operators than single unit operators.

  • SBA guaranteed loan volume to franchising is up and concepts on the SBA Franchise Registry now exceeds 500

It's hard to look at any aspect of franchising without concluding that there is strong momentum going into 2006. There will be lots of smiles on the convention attendees faces this year.
