Because of FRANdata's unique database, our Research Department gets asked a wide variety of questions about the business of franchising. To give you some idea of the breadth of our available information, we decided to share with you a recent to-do list from our Head of Research.

  • which industries are "hot"? show profitablility by industry, compare total revenue to net income - how much actual equity do these companies have?

  • Pizza Hut has 14 franchisees who own more than 100 units apiece. only 4% of Maaco Auto Painting franchisees are multi-unit owners. show mix of multi-unit franchisees to single-unit franchisees. how does it vary by industry, by size, by geography?

  • compare the pre-opening terms within the subshop subsector. are initial fees refundable to franchisees? under what conditions?

  • how do franchisees pay for the services provided them? do higher royalty fees equate to increased service levels? which systems have lower royalty and charge separately for services? does it vary by industry and program type?

  • analyze the frozen foods subsector. which brands have the largest presence? which are growing? look at units for the past 5 years. where are they growing? show state by state totals over time.

  • how many unit sales transactions take place in a given year? remember to include transfers in that calculation. what is the potential market size for vendors who are involved in the sales process in some way?

  • get Edith the addresses of existing multi-unit QSR franchisees in the northeast - ASAP! (as always)
