The growth over the past few years of those companies who sell smoothie's has been impressive. While there are at least 70 different franchise brands who have smoothie's on their menu, only about 30 of the consider smoothie's as their primary product.
Together these 30 brands account for about 3,000 stores. While Smoothie King and Jamba juice are the biggest players, there are many other brands that have a growing size of the market. Fifteen of these brands are still very new to the game, having been franchising for less than 5 years.
The number of franchised units for these brands has nearly doubled in the past 5 years - a 95% growth from 2002 to 2006. Not every system has seen positive growth every year , of course - though many of the new concepts have started with a roar. On average the brands have grown by 15-20% each year.
The top 25 designated marketing areas (DMAs) for these brands show that smoothie's are popular all over the country, if perhaps, slightly more prevalent in warmer climates than colder.
